What happened with many of the MSN refugees is they followed a link that was posted in the MSN group saying come join we have created a new "group". They followed the link to the community without going to global sign up. They took the name of the first community link they followed.

About half of the MSN people I know created new profile names but left the extension name as a back up profiles.

There is nothing useful that we can do about it. Hopefully they will start posting.

I've also found that no matter how I try to explain local vs. global usernames to the involved members, all I do is create even more confusion.

Kay, the creation in your avatar photo looks absolutely delicious.

Creating a "local profile" on a certain board does not add that profile to the board's memberlist.

OK in the last 2 days I have 2 different people come in my group with cookingwithkay after their name, there is no .u between the name or my group. Neither has joined, are in pending or anything. What can I do?

I do think that some like the local name. It means that they have a wider choice of name on the board they most frequent.

If the name Sandy was global they could still have Sandy on their own board. But local usually means you can't post anywhere in that name except that one board.

That's how it always used to be on ezboard.

Now a local account can post anywhere but to distinguish them from the global "Sandy" if they post off their own board...

I have never understood the need except that it provides more user names.
I think it causes more problems than it cures. IMO

So if anyone has put a link to the Yuku global registration page, if I were you I would go click on it and check it because it may now not be working.

It might mean having to put the link to the Yuku front page rather than the link directly into the global sign up page.

Despite blocking the Sign Up link with Andrew's CSS code and posting a "How to Sign Up" thread in the Welcome forum, 8 out of 10 new users still have local/board accounts. They click Login and are taken directly to a local account sign up page. Most of my members are there for the discussion and the board username isn't a problem until they post elsewhere.

The point is that there are people out there with our board names attached to them and could be doing anything.

......and if they are out there causing trouble on someone elses forum they could get those folks POd enough that they could cause trouble on our forums as in a board war. Nobody needs that.

You can hide the link with CSS or possibly the link replacement script could work on it too. I dunno, I haven't tested.

WHat I would suggest is all those members with the boardname attached go to the front page of Yuku and click to create a new .u username.

Ok, I realise they will have to choose something totally different but at least you would know who they were.

Pam, "trolls" and "clones" were pretty much interchangeable in MSN ~ the intent is the same: create havoc at someone else's expense ~ our group is open to read but you must join to post, so our members' nics ARE visible ~ we are a new group here in yuku, and we would love to have more join us ~ so we don't want to go private ~ I would think it could not happen in private groups UNLESS a member there is prone to this kind of...

Confusion can occur when the same name is used with a .u and a .boardname extension, with the .boardname extension being local to that board. Both would appear in posts without the extension.

We have two members with the same name, but nothing malicious was intended. It was just a coincidence. Because the first member didn't have many posts, we didn't notice the duplication when the second MBA was submitted. Within about a week, though, both members did post to the same...

Wow! I didnt know this can happen here. I know it happens a lot in Yahoo. There they are called clones. Trolls are something different there. Does this happen just in open boards or closed ones too???
