Hi Joan,
What is the link to your community? I'll take a look for you. Also, which part do you wish to make public and which part needs to be private? To make a forum public of private, fo to forum & chat Mgmt and click on settings next to the forum you wish to change the security settings of. Security settings are in the reading restrictions section. No view restrictions = public invisible with no view restrictions = invisible approved only = people will see the forum but they need to apply for membership to the forum in order to access it. |

lol got it
Ok this is what you have.. your front entrance is MBA (people have to apply for membership to join) Once they have been approved, they will stumble upon a problem.. every single one of your forums is membership by approval. When you approve someone to the board, unless you manually give them access to the individual forums, they will have to apply to each forum. Your admin forums are by approval as well, it is best to just make those invisible as you probably won't allow members there. Your support account is listed as memberwithout special privileges. Try this: when you're at the community, click on support in your navigation bar, up at the top between admin and find. Switch to the support account and view the board. This is what members will see after they have been approved to view the board. |

Butting in here for a minute and hope you don't mind. I think I know what Joan is asking Chris and it's the same thing you helped me with when we
first started our community at Yuku. Hope I'm not misunderstanding here.
To make it so people have to ask to join, go to Community Settings > Security > Community Access Select 'only approved members can post' .....which sounds like you have already done. To make it so that one of your forums is visible to non members: Forums & Chat > forums & chat mgmt > click on settings beside the forum you want visible > Under Reading Restrictions select 'No View Restrictions' To make the other forums visible to members only without having to approve them for each forum: Forums & Chat > forums & chat mgmt > click on settings beside the forum you want > Under Reading Restrictions select 'invisible' > click on 'edit' in the yellow bar that appears (a new message screen will appear) > Under Post count, put in 1 (the number one) > click on save. This will make it so that only members who have posted one message or more can see this forum. As far as I know, there is no way of making it so they can see it without posting one message first but hey, if a member can't post at least one message then they don't deserve to see the other forums. LOL You can do the same thing (as the last step) if you want to use the teaser title or teaser topics options. Those will allow non members to either see the forums but no messages or to see the forum and the topic headings but they won't be able to see any messages. Chris has explained above how to make any of the forums you don't want anyone to see invisible to all eyes but Admin or those that Admin have specifically chosen to see that forum. There is no 'join' button for nonmembers to click on with this method so it would probably be a good idea to put up a message on the forum they can see, letting them know they need to reply to a message to get the 'application' screen. This is part of the message that we have posted. To Join SignIn Here In order to join you'll need to click on reply below this message. Another screen will show where you will be prompted to join. Just follow the directions and leave a reason there why you wish to join. You will receive a message in your yuku mail when you've been accepted. Hope that helps. |

Thank you so much for your help - my brain isnt working today so I have copied the info and will try later lolol.
To think that on our fun site we have been clicking the buttons to allow each new member to read/post when we probably could have it set to do that automatically
Hugs Joan - she who is hoping her brain will awaken soon

Sigh - I just dont have the brain to do what you advise here Chris and Laurel.... I am just too nervous - scared of mucking it all up, then the owner would
give me a talking to I wouldnt want to hear hahahaha.
I am now on my knees asking for on site help please.... http://spiritwhispers.yuku.com This is the only section we want seen without folks joining - two pages under the category 'Open/Public Viewing Area'..... Having the front/main page visible is ok. Also, I know I am really pushing my luck here, but, when in there could you please make the chatroom 100% private. Joan climbs back up off her creaking knees and goes to get a refreshing cuppa
Thanks for any help you can give this old thicko. Hugs Joan |

I am now on my knees asking for on site help please.... http://spiritwhispers.yuku.comPlease get off your knees, we haven't mopped the floor in this forum in a loooong time.
This is the only section we want seen without folks joining - two pages under the category Right now.. the main security of the board was MBA, this means that nobody at all can see the community unless they apply for membership. I have changed this setting to public because you said Having the front/main page visible is ok. Now, thsi is what people see.. They will see the main page, and they will be able to access and post in the two forums under Open/Public Viewing Area I have not touched your other forums yet, but as they are now, all other forums are MBA. I don't think this is how you wantit, because people would have to apply for membership to each forum individually. What you could do is (okay what I could do for you) is make all forums invisible, except for the two open ones we just talked about. Once people have made two posts in the public forum (or one, whatever you choose), those invisible forums would become visible to them automatically. No work, no sweat, it's automatic. What do you think? Also, I know I am really pushing my luck here, but, when in there could you please make the chatroom 100% private. How hard did you push? Yoru chat room is already fully private. Don't be mistaken, when you click on your security map it will show as public, but that's a bug, all chat rooms show as public even if they are private. Anyways, it is private. You will need to give new members access as you go. My pleasure
Now just let me know how you want me to handle the private forums and I'll get it set up for you. |

Sorry I am slow at getting back to you Chris - had to go and wash my knees - you are right about the floor hahahahaha... I told you so. Now, thsi is what people see.. you had to quote that typo, eh? Sounds good to me - no work always sounds good to me ok I had one grey hair less before I read the above.
And, if we know the folks applying is there a way that we can immediately let em in fully without them having to post there? Your main entrance is currenly open, this means they don't have to apply to get in. When someone clicks on a link to the board, they will see the two forums you have currently public, those are the two forums under Open/Public Viewing Area. If we change the settings of the other forums so that they are all invisible, and become visible automatically, then those are the above mentioned forums are the only two forums they will see - until they start posting. With this set-up, there is no application necessary anywhere. The invisible forums will become visible to them, but they won't have to apply for membership, they will be able to post in them directly (unless you want them to remain by application, but then people will have to apply to each forum individually. Would I then need to put something in to let folks know they have to post there to gain access to the other boards? Yes you could do that. But if we keep them invisible, you'd have to say something like.. if you post here, the other forums will become visible to you (otherwise, since they can't *see* the forums, they may be thinking umm.. what forums are they talking about) However, we could leave the forums MBA, and give automatic access after one post. That way they would 'see' the forums. The problem I see with that is that people may start applying to the MBA forums before they have posted in the public forums. People tend to do that. It's up to you.. BTW I sorta figured the last post wasnt genuine. Painful people, those spammers no kidding! Thanks for your help and patience no problem

So, if I have this right Chris - what you have done will allow applicants to see front page and those two boards but thats
all. They apply - we accept or reject - I change the viewing bizzo's for each accepted applicant and Bobs yer uncle?

Okay - I am totally confuzzled now about who can and cant seenooooo way, you are? Sooooooooooooo, after all that, I reckon I will stay with ticking the boxes for who can see what after they have joined ok I hurried to change the main security back to MBA, because that is what you seem to be most comfortable with. So this is what you have.. you approve their membership, and then you can tick the boxes, but they will be able to see the two forums we mentioned above, you won't need to tick the boxes for those. Of course, if you want to tick those boxes a few times just for fun, be my guest. So, if I have this right Chris - what you have done will allow applicants to see front page and those two boards but thats all. They apply - we accept or reject - I change the viewing bizzo's for each accepted applicant and Bobs yer uncle? not quite but you're almost there. Once they have applied, they will still *see* all the forums, but they will only have access to your public forums (those two we talked about). The other forums, either they need to apply or you can tick the boxes. If you want, my offer still stands to make those forums completely invisible, but I'll change my offer.. I could make them completely invisible and then you tick the boxes of the forums you want them to see. My first offer was to make them visible automatically. I need a cuppa - wanna join me? You have earned one I think I've earned a bottle of whiskey!

By 'see' you mean just the forum headings, as on the front page, not the actual posts? Please say yes hahahayes I'll tick the boxes - please let me tick the boxesok you can tick the boxes, but if you tick more than 50 boxes a day, they will explode. they can ONLY open/access the two 'Public/Open' pages, not anything else?yesyesyesyes I *think* we're there:) Arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh - stop the world I wanna get offI stopped the world. Please let me know when I can restart it again. |
