Posts: 11 24-Oct-09 5:43 PM	Tags : None We have several people on our board who lurk. One logs in on a daily basis to read our posts but never shares. Without kicking them totally off the board, is there a way to encourage them to post, such as a setting that requires a minimum number of posts on a regular basis, or they can't enter a forum? I'm aware of the one for new members, but these are people that used to participate and don't anymore. Thanks for the help. I don't want to be mean, but it's like there's a stranger in the room, watching.

So that would not help you. If you have a public board you will always have some people that only read. I am not sure what you could do to encourage them either. If you send messages that say "please post" etc. many people will just feel harassed or spammed and still won't post.

Posts: 69 25-Oct-09 1:20 AM	To have an open group you have to expect that. I love to share so it doesn't matter whom visits member or non member. Lurkers are good ... if they are interested they will come back again and again so it's no prob to me. If you are wanting actual posters you may need to adjust your settings so that they can just see the subjects and not the content. Not sure that that will improve your chances of a poster though ... posters can be fickle. If they used to post what has happened that they now don't? If it was me it would prob be a time restraint ... maybe a general announcement to all members explaining that there is a minimum number of posts and then they would then be removed. Not sure that would help either lol Arizona is right ... you just can't make people post ... but you can make it interesting enough that they come back again and again.

ADMINISTRATOR Posts: 1988 25-Oct-09 5:30 AM	A member at a board I used to admin was an active poster, then turned into a lurker. I asked her why she'd stopped posting. She told me she'd come to feel like a thread killer (someone who posts replies that are always the last replies, as if what they posted killed the discussion) so, while she did want to keep up with what was going on in the community, she no longer felt comfortable posting because she thought she "ruined everything". The funny thing was, when I brought up the subject of "thread killers" on the board, saying I'd always felt like I was the resident thread killer, a bunch of other members popped up and said they thought they were the board's thread killers. A lurker may not have the time to both read and post or they may have lost their nerve for some reason. They're kind of like that in-real-life person at a business meeting or a party, who sits to one side just watching and listening. They are usually harmless. You could always disable Who's Online so you won't know they're there.

We are a private group, we've been together more than 10 years, but it's mostly women, and drama happens, people stop talking to other people, that kind of thing. I was just hoping for a setting that would make them have to say hello once in awhile. Of course, I can kick them out, but we know each other and used to be friends, have met in person, etc., it's not a board full of strangers. It would cause hard feelings and more drama. But thanks for trying to help, I do appreciate it. It would be easier for me to put up my own minimum post rule, if there was a way for me to tell when they last posted, but most members of my board have that info hidden. I should request that the Admin be able to see that, in the Admin center. I haven't had much luck searching by screen name, either. Didn't that used to be an option? I'm still in a pickle. Oh, well.

Posts: 70 25-Oct-09 4:35 PM	Arizona, I am adding my problem to this thread because it is similar. I would like to ban a person from my board who has not posted on the board. I have her IP from a stats program. I have banned her under a different account that has a different IP number. She does not even read, she just sits and makes clicks.. 80 to a hundred at a time. I have sent her inbox messages explaining that she is costing me money by doing this and that if she is looking for anything in particular I will be glad to help her find it. I have sent her an inbox message on 2 occasions and she has not responded. I have her IP number and account name. Is there any way to ban her from viewing my board? Thanks, Sarah

ADMINISTRATOR Posts: 13731 25-Oct-09 8:52 PM Yuku Help	Hi Sarah, You can ban by username even if the person is not a member of the board Click on banned in your admin menu. On the resulting page, you will see a ban box. Add the name plus extension in the box and click ban. Extension is anything that comes between the username and .yuku.com (e.g. .e, .boardname, .e)

Posts: 442 31-Oct-09 12:50 PM	OMG, we have so much trouble with this sort of thing. It takes a huge amount of my time. We have pretty much given up the idea of banning - unless to give a member a message of inappropriate behavior. They just come back again with a new email, a new profile name, and a new IP address - and it seems constant. (our board is private). They apply, we can't check IP, until they post - as far as I know. By the time, we know who they are, they are again members who lurk, don't post, and I have to say goodbye to them again. I mean, how many profiles, emails, and IP addresses can one person have? Unlimited? And then, we now have people using IP addresses that are not even in their area - like in AU when they are from CA. JMO, but I think it fun to have option of so many profiles, but sheesh - it makes it impossible for me to keep track of just a few members who seem to like playing this game. argggg. Just wanted to get my little vent in here.
