Why type code for forum search? |

Searching a forum requires copying a string of lively-looking letters into a box. Is this feature necessary; that is, do searches carry a security risk?
ezboard didn't have it, and it slows down the searcher.

I'd say it is to prevent automated search by bots.

Reasonable question to ask and I agree with Chris' answer, it would be the most logical. I've read recently that the robot software writers are
incredibly creative and crafty people as a group so the owners constantly need to update their software and knowledge just to stay current and operate from
defense.
It may be a pain, but it keeps the site cleaner and operational. |

I figured that the purpose was to keep bots out, but the mystery remains. Why would anyone send a bot to a "search forum" page? The search will
locate only pages that are publicly accessible, anyway (i.e., nothing from private forums). The bot can get the same information by going to those pages.
Can the requirement of inputting a code be made optional?

Most of the time, this works. Sometimes I want to see posts by a particular member, and the regular search doesn't capture them. thats how search engines and way back machine get info... Do their bots really use search boxes? Every page they can find from a search, they can find from scuttling around in the usual way. |

I don't know why they do, but I often come to a google search result that is itself a search result.

As well as having to type in security numbers for a search I also find the size and position of the actual search button strange.
One it's the tiniest buttons I have ever seen and two it's way over on the right of the page and under the wrapper so to speak, when logically it should be directly under where search details are typed in. First time I ever used the search feature I thought I was missing the search button. It took me a while to find it. |

Me too. I just hit enter every time until I found it way over on the opposite side of the page and hidden until I scrolled down further. I still hit enter
because it is quicker than moving the mouse over to the right and back.
It might be a problem underneath though if autocomplete is enabled, so maybe just to the right of the text box? |
