Posts: 48 28-Jun-08 11:04 AM	Yuku has many more features than ezBoard. Some are nice improvements, especially the messaging inbox. And users can always suggest new features. But we don't have a way to suggest features for "retirement". So... If you could suggest one feature for elimination in the next big software push, what would it be? Please make it something that would make Yuku easier for your members, not just easier for the board owner. Me, I would eliminate the creation of new local user profiles. I have wasted vast amounts of time trying to explain the differences between local and global profiles. Apparently I have done a lousy job. New members still wind up with local user names by accident. I think allowing only global profiles from now on would make Yuku easier. Tom

Posts: 75 28-Jun-08 12:26 PM Rare	I can't think of one to be honest. Compared to how it was in 2006 when I first had a look it's marvellous now. I could wish that I hadn't had to learn anything about css because I find if you don't use it often then you forget it - well I do anyway - but other than that I think yuku has come on by leaps and bounds and I'm rather glad I've been here to see it, although it was touch and go whether I would at one time.

Of course we had to have them for those coming from ezboard that already had them but I see no reason for them at all on this system especially as ezboard at one time was talking about doing away with them over there anyway. Apart from that I can't think of one feature I would do away with as most features are a choice. Even the Hall of Fame, although I personally think it a useless addition, I wouldn't do away with it because some people like it.

Posts: 707 28-Jun-08 5:12 PM	I agree with Tom about local profiles. I'd add mandatory avatars to the "ready for retirement" list. That is, make No Avatar Display the default and do away with Blue Balloonhead. Avatars would display automatically for members who had them. The space would be blank for members who did not. The same for a community's picture or logo or whatever it is. Don't make admins work around this requirement just because we want to edit our community's information. Many boards came here involuntarily from ezboard, where we could run our boards without figuring out so many features. Oh, I was supposed to pick just one? Oops!

(I'm in IE7 right now) Well, I'm making that long story short. Local usernames can't be gotten rid of. For some of us it's too important. Some people really want a username that is taken and rather than creating some monstrosity like 'JoeF12345678901965' they'd rather have 'Joe.boardname'. I don't like the defaulting to local when you sign up at a board, I could live without that, but I did come up with a way around it. I just put a link in my global HTML saying 'If you are new to Yuku and wish to sign up, click here <insert link to post>' and in the post explained that if you sign up at my board, you have .sygil in your username and provided a link to yuku.com and instructions to sign up there. But there are too many situations where people may need a local name and don't mind it being local because the global name is taken. Many people (including myself in certain situations) post under different usernames at different boards. Back on point, though, I can't honestly think of anything that should be gotten rid of. Everything added to Yuku was added because Ezboard users wanted the feature. May not be your cup of tea (case in point the Hall of Fame... I find it useless myself), but someone wanted it, so we need it. Just remember, you can't please all the people all the time, all you really can do is make it acceptable enough for most of the people.

Right now it's even more confusing than on ezBoard. What I would love to get rid of is the automatically marked read feature. It's annoying me to no end. Plainly, I want to be able to decide when I am done with a specific forum or thread, not when some computer decides I might be. I suggested an alternative to getting rid of the feature (since I know some people like it), though, and if that ever comes I will be completely happy with Yuku as it is.

The page that describes it is aching for the services of a technical writer or copy editor. Those are easy to remember. As for the local board name, invariable the user wants it change. I have seen many a post where ppl ask to have it change.

When one clicks to join from a board it simply needs additions to that page with......... 1) An explaination of the difference between Local and Global names. 2) Another link to take people to the page to sign for a Global account if they don't want a Local one. Why something like this has not been done I don't know. It's wrong that people aren't aware of the difference between the two accounts when they sign up and it's wrong that they aren't told that they are going to have the board name after their name if they sign from that page. It shouldn't be left to owners to have to put a special link on their boards, as I have, taking them to the Global sign in page.

I would even go so far and make the default account global but have the mentioned page with the explanation and have a link that people need to specifically click when they want a local account. It would probably me something like "the desired username is taken. If you want to create a local account for boardname click here." The present system is pretty terrible, but it's not because of the presence of local account. It's because of the implementation. I had the opposite problem from most people here. I had users who wanted a local profile added to their account and couldn't figure out how to get it. (and I, plainly, couldn't figure it out either, despite having been here for years. I had to ask)

Simply on the sign up page offer local as a second option with a explaination of "If your name isn't available as a global username, you can make it a local name with the board extension on the end by putting the name in field" if someone clicked on sign up from a board. Not many people seem to sign up from yuku.com, but it would be easy enough to put in something that says if your name isn't available, go to the board you're interested in posting on and you can make the account local. Defaulting to local just doesn't make much sense as most people, even most of us, didn't realize until we tried it that it did default to local. And most people would prefer global over local if the name is available. The ability to have a local name post on any board is a wonderful thing, having once had a long since lost (to a purged board) local name, I would have liked to have that local name post anywhere, but it so does need to be clearer when signing up as to exactly what you are doing and what you're getting when you do it, and the option to get what you without a surprise when you post at another board.
