I found it fairly easy when I took it in high school. I did reach a point at the end of Spanish 1 that I was having a hard time grasping it, but it was the very end and we weren't spending as much time on it, I imagine I would have gotten it if I had more time.
Of course, now the trend is to start teaching languages at an earlier age than they did about 15 years ago... which is good, younger children can just pick it up easier because they aren't locked into a mindset of their native language already. It's one of the hardest things to overcome, already having the language rules and structure drilled into you when another language comes along and is different. There are so many bilingual people in the world who learned two languages side by side since they were babies and have both mastered with no difficulties. Often times at work I have the kids on the phone doing the orders for their parents because they can speak both English and Spanish and can translate it far easier than the parent can when they are trying to do it with me... the English speaker... and they being the not so well versed in English.

It's just easier to learn it as a child. If a second language is mandatory for all
children to learn, the better we become down the road and it might encourage adults to learn too.
