I guess one more retrospectively stupid question.

The aforementioned funds were applied and the free views are ticking down in the control panel, and non-supporters have chimed in saying the ads are suddenly gone. However, if I log out I still see ads. Is this because in the Ads Settings page, "unregistered users" is not checked? Or is it a glitch (what we endearingly used to call an "ezfeature")? If the former, can we safely read Ads Settings to mean "check here to allow this group to benefit from Gold when Gold is available"? And unchecking it means even if you're Gold, that group still gets ads? So I could check it and ads would disappear for absolutely everyone, though the free pages would be used up faster (perhaps this even explains a bit of the numbers discrepancy)?
