Posts: 111 23-Jan-09 9:53 AM	LOL ~ after a couple of months with virtually no problems, I seem to be spending a lot of time here recently ~ A problem is developing with cloners ~ we have a number of members who joined a group before joining yuku, and their nics have the group extension ~ we understand the work-around for that ~ BUT some MSN cloners whose mission in life is to create havoc and make others miserable seem to have grabbed the nic.u account for those members ~ they have gone so far as to create new profiles for the nic.u account ~ the phony profiles are easy to recognize by those of us who know what is going on ~ the clones have NOT posted anywhere so far as we can tell so we cannot yet capture their ip addresses ~ I understand there's nothing yuku can do without the ip addresses ~ but I don't think it's fair that someone needs to change his/her nic just because he/she has been victimized by a troll ~ any suggestions would be greatly appreciated ~ Sooz

If they have not posted what are they doing? I am just happy to be here at Yuku. Unless you kick my dog or something ... I am going to love you all.

It really does not seem fair but I really don't think there is anything that can be done unless a troll account actually contravenes yuku's TOU. You may need to identify posting trolls and IP ban them and you may consider blocking these troll profiles from viewing your board (i.e. no access). I don't know what else to suggest.

Posts: 111 23-Jan-09 10:46 AM	We have blocked the troll nics from our group ~ but we have yet to find posting or requests to join by the trolls, so we have been unable to capture the ip addresses ~ we have however just found 2 faux yuku groups set up by the trolls ~ in one group, one of the trolls is identified as "owner", so I'm hoping yuku can do something there ~ but on the second faux group, the owner is identified as one of the bastardized nics ~ and all the members there are the bastardized nics/accounts ~ what is wrong with some people? Posts: 111 23-Jan-09 11:19 AM	Marty, trolls are social misfits who take the nic of someone they don't like, change it just a teeny bit, and then post as the other person ~ unless people pay very close attention, the difference often goes unnoticed ~ but it can be dangerous ~ it is done to make the person whose nic is hijacked look ridiculous, or stupid, or ... or ... or ... there is NO reason to hijack others' nics other than to create havoc in a group ~ if you join yuku BEFORE you join a group, you get the ".u" designation, which is a registration function within yuku so that no one else can use your nic in yuku ~ but if you join a group first, you bypass that registration process ~ and then the ".u" registration is available to someone else ~ that is exactly what is happening with a couple of our members ~ Sooz

Posts: 2205 23-Jan-09 12:23 PM munificent member	Confusion can occur when the same name is used with a .u and a .boardname extension, with the .boardname extension being local to that board. Both would appear in posts without the extension. We have two members with the same name, but nothing malicious was intended. It was just a coincidence. Because the first member didn't have many posts, we didn't notice the duplication when the second MBA was submitted. Within about a week, though, both members did post to the same thread. One thing you could do is block either the .u or .boardname version of your members' names--choosing the extension to block based on which version of the name was used first, but that can be a tedious task. We have 1,250 .brewersfandemonium members, 1,533 .u members, and 499 .e members; it'd be too much work.

Posts: 111 23-Jan-09 12:25 PM	Pam, "trolls" and "clones" were pretty much interchangeable in MSN ~ the intent is the same: create havoc at someone else's expense ~ our group is open to read but you must join to post, so our members' nics ARE visible ~ we are a new group here in yuku, and we would love to have more join us ~ so we don't want to go private ~ I would think it could not happen in private groups UNLESS a member there is prone to this kind of "fun" ~ Sooz

Ok, I realise they will have to choose something totally different but at least you would know who they were. I would give anything to be able to stop people registering with Yuku from my board. I absolutely hate it that people have my boardname stuck on the end of their name.

It's true Andrew that board owners can hide the board names but that is not the point. The point is that there are people out there with our board names attached to them and could be doing anything. Plus we have to remember to add that snippet of coding everytime we make a new skin. I had someone join on my board not long ago. He instantly became a member even though he never made one post, simply because he registered from my board and I haven't seen him since. I don't even want my own members to have my board name attached to theirs. On ezboard on the sign up page there was a choice of clicking for a local or a global account. Why isn't that done here. Why do Yuku insist on keeping the sign ups the way they are when members don't want it. To top it all now it has been stopped removing boardnames from the user when requested. It seems to me that virtually since the beginning of last year nothing is being done in the interest of the member. Once when members requested something Yuku bent over backwards to try to accommodate. Oh how things have changed since the beginnings.

Nobody needs that.

Posts: 94 24-Jan-09 1:18 AM	Despite blocking the Sign Up link with Andrew's CSS code and posting a "How to Sign Up" thread in the Welcome forum, 8 out of 10 new users still have local/board accounts. They click Login and are taken directly to a local account sign up page. Most of my members are there for the discussion and the board username isn't a problem until they post elsewhere. I have one member with a board username at a similar forum. At some point he also signed up for a global account with the same username, but a different e-mail address. Now he has two separate Yuku accounts with what appear to him to be the same username and the same password. For years he happily used his board username, until a few days back when he somehow accidentally logged into his global account. All his PMs "disappeared". He was lost and had no idea how to get back. Mind you, he is a valuable member of my community, but he's not a computer wiz. It was not his fault and he's a member of my forum so I will help him out. Even so, it took me dozens of PMs, e-mails and screen captures along with hours of my time to help him solve the problem. If Yuku compensated me at my billing rate for fixing this one instance of THEIR issue, it would pay my forum costs for over a decade! Yuku is supposed to be a community where users can easily visit many different forums. Board usernames make that difficult and ugly. I don't care that board usernames were an ezBoard legacy system. ezBoard is gone. Now is the time to shut off any new registration for board usernames. Enough is enough. Tom

I have tried Register HERE <a href="http://www.yuku.com/signup/me/">Register HERE</a> and I have tried <a href="http://www.yuku.com/signup/me/Step-1.html">Register HERE</a> Now that used to work because I had it on my old board. Why isn't it working now. I got the urls direct from the sign up page. I'm going to click on them from this post once I have posted to see where they take me from here. So if anyone has put a link to the Yuku global registration page, if I were you I would go click on it and check it because it may now not be working. It might mean having to put the link to the Yuku front page rather than the link directly into the global sign up page.
