I have never understood the need except that it provides more user names.
I think it causes more problems than it cures. IMO

Is there anyone that actually likes a local name?

I do think that some like the local name. It means that they have a wider choice of name on the board they most frequent.
If the name Sandy was global they could still have Sandy on their own board. But local usually means you can't post anywhere in that name except that one board. That's how it always used to be on ezboard. Now a local account can post anywhere but to distinguish them from the global "Sandy" if they post off their own board then the board name is attached. It has caused so much chaos. The funny thing is a long time ago on Ezboard they were talking about doing away with new sign ups for local accounts. Yet moving over here to Yuku they not only allowed more local sign ups but allow them to be used as a global account. I said it more than once that all it needs is the link to be changed from sending someone to a local account sign up to a page where they can choose local or global. Will they do that. No. I honestly don't think they care how much trouble we are put to. The more we ask for something this last year or so the more they dig their heels in and merrily go their own way. It used to be that if most members requested something they would give us a choice. For instance some wanted avatars to change in all posts and some wanted them to be historical, so the original Yuku made it so that board owners could choose. Now we suddenly find that signatures have become historical with absolutely no announcement to tell us so. When at first my signature didn't change I reported it as a bug. Even the staff didn't know that they had changed it. Those at the top just will not communicate nowadays. To me it's nothing but arrogance. All this has been since Kickapps took over. |

Creating a "local profile" on a certain board does not add that profile to the board's memberlist.

Kay,
There is nothing useful that we can do about it. Hopefully they will start posting. I've also found that no matter how I try to explain local vs. global usernames to the involved members, all I do is create even more confusion. Kay, the creation in your avatar photo looks absolutely delicious. Tom (Edit: Alison is right. I have a bunch of local accounts with 0 posts, but I checked and they are all from the ezBoard days)

What happened with many of the MSN refugees is they followed a link that was posted in the MSN group saying come join we have created a new "group".
They followed the link to the community without going to global sign up. They took the name of the first community link they followed.
About half of the MSN people I know created new profile names but left the extension name as a back up profiles. |

Zandranna wrote:Sandy, that link only works when you're logged out. Otherwise, it redirects to the last Yuku page you've loaded. The last page loaded is usually going to be the page you're currently viewing. However, if you've subsequently loaded another page in a different tab/window, then return to a previous tab/window to enter the URL, the page from the different tab/window will open. The only way I can think of to make such a link user friendly would be for Yuku to give us the ability to display certain content only to users who aren't logged in. Besides making a global signup link work, I could see other uses, such as reminding people to log in to gain functionality available to logged in members (accurate new post icons, individual preferences kicking in, Supporter benefits, etc.). |
