Due to the increased reports about 401 errors, I'm going to post this here at bugs for now. It may help understanding where the 401 error is coming from and how to deal with it.
There are different kinds of 401 errors, they are listed below.
Error 401 unauthorized: You need to login in order to access this page.
This error occurs when you are trying to access a private community while logged out of your account. The error also occurs when you perform any kind of action that requires login (e.g. trying to post while logged out)
When you see this error, you are *not* having access problems, you simply need to log in. You can use the login fields at the top left of your screen as seen in the image below:
Error 401 unauthorized: Sorry you do not have permission to post on a new topic.
This error occurs when you try to post in a forum where you don't have permission to post. The forum may be view-only.
If you think your inability to post is unintentional, you can check with a board admin by sending them a message, or you can use the contact support link in the community statistics section if that link is available.
Error 401 unauthorized: Sorry you do not have permission to reply to this forum.
This error occurs when either the forum settings or your individual member settings do not allow you to reply to a topic in that particular forum. If you think your inability to reply is unintentional, you can check with a board admin by sending them a message, or you can use the contact suppost link in the community statistics section if that link is available.
Error 401 unauthorized: Sorry, you have been banned. When an admin of a community bans your profile.. etc.. etc..
This error occurs when you have been banned by username. A ban by username is not usually an unintentional ban.
Should you wish to discuss your banning issue with a board admin, please read the last part of the article here: http://support.yuku.com/topic/12629
401 unauthorized: Sorry your IP address has been banned.
You will encounter this message when you are using an IP that has been banned. If your IP is dynamic, you may be the victim of an unintentional ban. Please contact the board owner.
It also wouldn't hurt to read this topic
Error 401 unauthorized: Error 3: Sorry this community does not allow anonymous viewing.
You will see this error when your online status is set to be anonymous, or to not show your online status at all. In order to get past this error, click on account in your navigation bar. Then click on preferences towards the bottom left of the page.
Change your online status to not anonymous and save the changes.
Error 401 unauthorized: Sorry, you don't have access to this forum.
You will see this error when you try to access a forum where you don't have access. Those are usually public forums where access has been denied to individuals. When you see this error, you could contact a board admin and ask if it was an intentional access denial or not.
Error 401 unauthorized: Sorry you don't have access to this community.
This error is the most intricate. It occurs on some communities and to some users.
The error may -but does not necessarily- occur when the answer is yes to both of the following questions:
1) Are the security settings of the community anything other than fully public? (other settings can be posting by approval, registered users only, or MBA)
2) Have you subscribed to any topics at that community?
Once you have been hit by this error, it could occur again. The only way to never see this error again is to not subscribe to any more topics at that community. As long as you don't have any subscriptions, you will not be locked out of the community.
This is a bug that is being looked into.
How to get your access back:
If you do not see a board admin on line, please post in this topic and we will restore access for you immediately.
If you do see a board admin on line, you could send them a private message and ask to click on your name in the member list twice. This will restore your access.
As I cannot reproduce this error at will, I don't have a screen shot but anyone who can provide a screen shot, please do and I'll add it here.
Error 401 unauthorized: Sorry we only allow 1 post per 60 seconds
This error is seen when post flood check is enabled at a board. When you see this error, you may want to check with the owner of the community to make sure it is their intention to have this option enabled. It is enabled by default on newly created communities and a board owner may not be aware that this is the case.
Error 401 unauthorized: You have exceeded your daily post/reply limit
This page is rendered when the board admins have posting restrictions in place. Those restrictions may be for all members or for some members in particular. It never hurts to check with the board admins and make sure this was intentional.
Error 401 unauthorized: Sorry, you don't have permission to view this page.
You will see this error when you are an admin with limited powers and you try to access a part of the control panel you don't have access to. E.g. you may not have access to the security log. Should you click on the log, you'd see this error.
Generally, 401 error indicates a restriction. In many cases those restrictions are intentional. We do not interfere with restrictions of any kind, as the board admins are free to run their communities as they see fit. If you feel that the restrictions you are seeing may not have been intentional, the best thing to do is to contact a board admin and discuss the issue.
The only 401 error we can help you with is 401 unauthorized: you don't have permission to access this community.
Any other 401 error should be discussed with the board admins.
Thank you
