A picture speaks a thousand words.
When you need to report a bug, or when you think that something is not displayed the way it should be, a screen shot will often add precious information to your post.
Taking a screen shot
Display the screen you want to take a screen shot of.
Hit the 'print screen' key on your keyboard, over to the right.
Open your paint program or a similar program. To do this, go to start-> programs-> accessories-> paint
Open the edit menu in your paint program and select "paste", the image you took of your screen will now appear on your paint sheet.
Close the window, title your file and save it.

When you only need to show a small part of the screen, there is no reason to upload the entire screen shot, it is just wasted space on your hosting service.
You can cut out just the part you need and discard the rest.
To cut out the part you need, use the tool circled with red in the example. Seclect the tool by clicking on it.
Draw a square or a rectangle around the part you want to cut out.
Click inside the square or rectangle and drag it to the top left of your paint sheet.
Drag the bottom and the right side of your paint sheet in order to close in on the image.
Close the paint window and save the image.
Depending on your operating system (windows98, windowsXP, etc.), it might give you a choice of which file type you want to save it as, select a file that is appropriate, then save it.
Now you can upload your screen shot and post it.

Taking a screen shot on a Mac (by alison)
To do a screenshot on a Mac is nice and simple, just look up all the different ways in Mac help.
Each of those will save a pdf file to your desktop, which you can just rename and upload. I suggest you use the second option.
Alternately, you can use "Grab" to take screenshots, look in your Applications > Utilities folder.
Firefox users can add the Fireshot extension. This free add-on makes capturing and editing an image easy.
Once you have added Fireshot to Firefox, there is an option that will integrate Fireshot into Internet Explorer.

- Take a picture of part of the screen - ⌘-Shift-4, then drag to select the area you want in the picture. To cancel, press Escape.
- Take a picture of a window, a menu, the menu bar, or the Dock - Press ⌘-Shift-4, then press the Space bar. Move the pointer over the area you want so that it's highlighted, then click. To drag to select the area instead, press the Space bar again. To cancel, press Escape.
