Posts: 9389 4-Mar-08 1:26 AM	I think some people are not reading posts fully, and they are spreading confusion. Let me reiterate the main points. If you own a board, then you do NOT see ads on THAT board - whether that board is gold or not. If you donate money to any board, then for every $5 you donate you get $1 of Supporter for your own account ($1 equals 1 month, not just a few days). Supporter means that you do NOT see ads on any board or any profile in our whole network. When you go from being a supporter to NOT being a supporter, currently nothing happens. And we would not consider an "auto delete" for profiles either, so that's not going to happen. But right now, you don't lose access to your profiles or your sigs. yuku is not more expensive than ezboard. Talk to some of the admins who have been experiementing with their stats and settings. Many have commented that the estimated cost of their boards is working out cheaper than their ezboards. Only time will tell us this.

I am not even complaining now. I have over 400 days of gold on my board. I was just pointing out some grey areas in this supporter/gold controversy. Also, I believe that yuku charges more than ezboard, but maybe it is too early to tell. It is hard to tell because the supporter/gold prices are much more confusing than they were on ezboard. BTW, to avoid any confusion, TigerLady is my other ID.

Boards under 50k page views pay $6 per month Boards over 50k page views pay $6 per 30,000 ad-free page view And some more points: Gold for boards under 50k removes ads for ALL viewers Gold for boards over 50k is manageable, and you can select who sees ads and who doesn't so that you can manage the overall cost. ad-free page views only count on pages that have ads, and only topic pages have ads. Boards that move into the over 50k pricing model STAY on it, even if they drop back below 50k. You can read more about Gold boards and ads settings in our documentation. Posts: 1263 4-Mar-08 4:50 AM	Alison -- If I have a board that is under 50K and I purchase a year of Gold/Ad free for $54/$60 for a year (12 months) and one of the months in the middle goes over the 50K for that particular month, does that affect the $54/60 year (12 months) payment that I made? And if so, how is that handled? Thanks!

If the board goes back below 50k, then the ad-free page views that you have are converted back into days. You do NOT go back to gold in days, you stay on ad-free page views. Plus who is to say that we don't disable the extra bits at some point? ie - you still have them, but they are not accessible. You can't choose them in your drop down menu.

I assumed this would make little practical difference apart from the way we used up our contributions. I haven't had any occasion to read the help pages about ads recently; I didn't know there was an 'Ad Options' / 'Ads Settings' page until I read this thread. The link in the control panel doesn't appear in the box for 'Community Settings', only in the menu sidebar, and then only if 'Community Settings' is expanded, so I hadn't noticed it. Having read this thread I checked it straight away - or as soon as I could find it, anyway - and it seems the 'Logged out users' box isn't ticked by default on a gold board, so I've been merrily serving up ads to guest viewers and logged out members for the last week - something I really didn't want to do, both for club reasons and because I put a lot of effort into designing a clean, fairly minimalist board. If guests don't see ads on a <50k Gold board by default, the default settings should be the same for >50k, surely, particularly if the boards can transition from one to the other and back without notification? In this case, displaying ads to guests was chosen as the default to prevent the possibility of a troll coming in and intentionally running up a bunch of chargeable page views.

Is there a way to give me an example, because to be honest, I'm not cetain that I quite get this. Let's say I've purchased 6 months of Gold for $60 (or $54) and I'm moving along at under 50K page views. Then suddenly somewhere in month #4, I go 60K. The charges then switch to views based at $6/30K. So, at the end of month #4, I am reassessed and the following month, month #5, I will be charged ... $12? So, then if I thought I purchased 6 months of Gold, I know have 5, or perhaps 4 depending on what happens in the coming months #5 and #6? I don't think I'm understanding this correctly.

I have a wonderful person on my board who contributes $5 a month (which on a 200+ member board with about 250 posts a day, is enough to keep us going over the year, at current page view ad rates). She also gets Yuku supporter. Under the old system, I would have that--and no matter how many people contributed to my board or how much the board had in the Chest--be it $60 or $180, there'd only be the one Supporter account that came with it--mine. And I'd never'd have to contribute a damn thing, instead palming off on my members. Now, if 3 people contribute the money that makes up that same $180, say, they each get Yuku supporter for a year for their contribution. Surely people can see that Yuku is actually making less money, overall, from this, not more? And that it's a fairer system all round?

However, you only pay for pages which would otherwise serve ads. If you sit at just over 50,000 total page views, you're probably going to end up paying for 25,000-30,000 views. As an example, on January 29, I dropped in $6 for a month of Gold for lambeauleap.yuku.com. On February 12, seventeen days were converted to 16,138 page views. As of February 27th, there were 10,121 page views left. Had LL remained on days, Gold would have been gone on February 29. As of now, going into March 5th, LL has 2,981 ad-free views left. Gold would have likely lasted a bit longer, but the board had a major usage spike today with Brett Favre's retirement. At any rate, page views is a more economical pricing system than days, and today's spike put LL back over 50,000 total views for the past month. Last Edited By: 1992casey 4-Mar-08 9:12 PM. I'm finding the same thing, that page views is more economical, for us, anyhow, than how the old EZ gold system seemed to work. We averaged about 200 posts a day (5,000-odd views) a month ago. Today we had a spike-- an influx of new members over the last week, a popular story finished, and a particularly niiice picture of Hot Bloke X posted, to 271 new posts for today thus far (and now on an average of over 6,000 views a day)... yet the ad views hasn't been affected badly at all. On the old system, if my Gold had been due to be renewed this week, we'd've been paying more than "normal" for us. The other thing to remember (as someone very kindly pointed out to me elsewhere), to anyone who's worried about this is that if you go into over 50k "ad views" you have more control over who you actually want to see ads from your control panel. So if you have a severe lurker problem, for example, you can set it to have any unregistered users see the ads while your regular posting members do not, which cuts down on your "ad views" stats for real users of your board and means the gold lasts longer.

Well - I could see that a board with a lot of lurkers might run up page views, I'm slightly unconvinced that a troll would or could make a significant difference. A cynic might also say that Yuku could bump up it's ads figures this way, as well. Having said that, perhaps I wasn't clear; my point was not that the default should be a certain way, but that it should be the same way for both under and over 50k pageviews, given that: (1) it's likely that many aspects of the charging system will not have come to everyone's attention because of the way it's been rolled out, (2) 'Ads Setting' is not obvious in the control panel and may not come to everyone's attention, (3) it's not always obvious when a board will transition from <50k to >50k and there is no automatic notification, (4) Many people will have bought Gold thinking it means 'Ad free for all', particularly if they bought as the system was being rolled out when details were unclear, changing or incorrect, (5) A marginal board may repeatedly transition from <50k to >50k; if the defaults are imposed at every transition a board admin will have to keep watching the numbers to make sure their preferred settings are selected every time. I'm not one of those who turns up here late from Ezboard and hates everything about Yuku; my board is brand spank me new anywhere, and I've been on Yuku since 2006 playing around to learn the system; but it's things like this that really niggle away, put another nail in the coffin, and essentially the problem is not the ads system or pricing (in fact, Yuku's looking pretty cheap at the moment) but clarity and communication. I think it's necessary for the admins to get a pm or email notification that the status of the board has changed, and that could also give some pointers to the newly aquired settings. I am asking for that to be put in (actually, as far as I am aware, the specs outlined that it would happen). It's important to be clear and communicate these things to people.
