Speed bumps: Was ezBoard quicker than Yuku? |
Lead | ||
|
Ever since my board was Yuku-ized, I had the impression that the board takes a couple of seconds longer to traverse from thread to thread, folder to folder,
than it did when it was an ezBoard. I realized why this may be so (more and different elements in the Yuku board), but does my impression reflect other
people's impression of the slowness/quickness of their boards? Were ezBoards quicker?

I do think EZboards were quicker... | #1 | ||

and there wasn't such glaring differences between what browser you use. When 50% of users still use IE, I think problems with IE should be addressed. I
personally use Firefox but for some, to download a new browser is a major undertaking.
I like yuku better than ezboard for the ability to customize and pretty much everythign else but I would much rather have substance over style. The issues with IE are frustrating to me.

It definitely takes longer for threads/posts to open and load than it did on EZ. It also takes longer for the reply box to open than it did on EZ. And it
takes awhile for the smilies to open and I dislike how one has to scroll through them. I would much prefer them to be on one page/screen.
There are some nice changes, though -- most notably the ability to upload pictures, etc., and the affiliation with photobucket. |

Over all I don't notice much difference. I'm over 5,000 miles from the server. Either can have it's speedy moments and either can drag.
Let's see what it's like after the push and the servers are moved. |

I would have to say the # of boards left on ezboard might have something to do with the performance as well.

I agree. But with Yuku we have better performance.

Yuku is MUCH slower than Ezboard for me and the different browser issues are causing a ton of problems for me. I never had these problems at all with Ezboard.
The additional features on Yuku are great, but they are of greatly reduced effectiveness when simple posting and editing can be a huge obstacle.

Definitely seems slower to me but I don't mind putting up with it because I prefer the Yuku interface and functions.

ezboard was slow for me many times. I used IE 5 then. yuku isn't often slow for me with Firefox, but it's down more of the time than ezboard was.

The pages probably take longer to load here at Yuku than at ezboard because every single page contains our "control center" [the Navigation bar], which contains our latest threads we posted on, whether we've gotten any PM's, now many friend requests we have, and so forth -- and all that stuff has to be downloaded from their database before the page can display. |

Never on Yuku. I can wait a second or two more. |

Yuku pages download anywhere from 2-3 times as many bytes of information as the old ezBoard pages. The ease with which posters can overload a thread with
photos has some forum pages downloading several MBytes of images. I've lost most of my dialup members as a result.
Also, Yuku has enough additional menu choices that my less computer literate members have difficulty navigating the system. Yuku may be more versatile and flexible, by ezBoard was well, easy. Easy is good if you have an older group of forum members. Tom |

My board members post a lot of pictures, we haven't seen any difference in speed between either ez or Yuku by itself. WHEN either was running at its normal
speed.
The odd slow downs not withstanding. In fact Yuku loads faster because pictures are hosted on Yuku instead of a third party host, which in 90% of the cases where there was a speed difference it was the picture host's server that was causing the slowdown not Yuku. |

I'd think dialup is a real killer on Yuku.I must strongly disagree here. I am a dial up user and given my remote location, my "speed" on an average day is far less than what most dial up users get. I am on yuku at least 8 hours a day and feel that I can browse around quite comfortably. If I couldn't, I wouldn't be able to work for yuku. I use gmail as my main email and permanently have to view it in basic HTML view. My connection isn't fast enough to access my gmail in standard view. I rarely -very rarely- have to make adjustments (such as disabling images) to view a yuku board. The only difference is that customisation is a lot easier on yuku, and the fact that we can link to photobucket, plus the fact that we have our own free image storage on yuku seems to result in people using more images than they did on ezboard. I'll generously admit that some boards are borderline impossible to load, but when you look, there will be a picture in every post, and every member will have signatures with images and whatnot. Try to view an identical board on ezboard or any other board system, and you'd run into problems too as a dial up user. I honestly don't feel that dial up is a killer on yuku. It loads just fine on my 24Kbps connection, much, much better than multiple other sites I could list here. |

I am a cable user (Comcast) but I have maintained the same dialup account I've had for 12 years since I must have uninterrupted Internet access and there
can be temporary outages with Comcast. I'm now on my dialup account (49.2 Kbps) to test the speed of Yuku. Since there are no images on this forum, I
thought it would be a good place to test. It's very slow navigating between forums and topics and getting to my main page (just like my experience with
cable) but once I get to the forum or topic, the page seems to load just as fast as it does when I use Comcast Cable.
This strongly suggests to me that the speed issues we experience are Yuku issues and not related to how we access the Internet. |
