Is there a mobile version of Yuku?... |

Our users are requesting the ability to properly view the board with an iphone or blackberry. Any advice would be appreciated.

While I know people have posted with hand held thingies, it would be advantageous if Yuku could set things up so we could do style sheets for various
media types.
Right now, media types aren't designated, so we're basically creating screen CSS and feeding it to all devices. I think print, aural, and handheld would be logical ones to start with. But maybe a broader solution would be in order: we could be allowed multiple style sheets, with a style sheet manager to designate which type of device each sheet is intended to apply to. |

Now why on earth would anyone want a mobile version of Yuku? And have to pay a premium for constant white screening on
their mobile phone? Laugh my grockels off.

You could use a device that connects via WiFi and not pay anything beyond what you'd normally be paying.

Still, what exactly does this do? Does it send mobile updates to threads you are subscribed to?

I have a Sidekick and I am able to just navigate here to Yuku and view the boards. No need for any special "mobile" versions. |

I have a SK3 and the Yuku login won't accept when I log in. Just reloads blank over & over again. I type in my screen name and password, then it
reloads blank yet again.
I have Javascript turned on, also.
Also, clicked on link to account and I can find nothing that says "mobile". I get all sorts of categories, like Profiles, Settings, Notifications, but nothing that says "Mobile." Went into each category, also, and found nothing about "mobile." Where exactly is that page?

I couldn't find it from the Account link at the top of my profile page but in the dropdown from Navigation under Account click Settings and it pops up from
there. :-)

or you can also just add this part to your profile URL:

GrayEagle, I have used the Sidekick 2, Sidekick 3, Sidekick LX, and last week I bought the Sidekick LX 2009 (YouTube compatible), and all have worked great here at Yuku. No problems (excepting when Yuku was still being built, but that doesn't really count). I don't know why you are having trouble logging in, but I post on my message board every single day using my Sidekick with no problem. I will give you a tip, though. You should turn the JavaScript off. It is not really necessary for here at Yuku, and serves only to slow-down the page-loading times. You certainly don't need to have it turned on in order to log in. There is no mobile version, but you don't really need one anyway with the Sidekick. Just go to the board you want to post on and log in. I have found the best settings is to select "View --> Screen-Size Layout." If you cannot log in, there is a problem with your particular device since, like I said, I don't have any problems logging in at all and I've been using the SK here for years.

You should turn the JavaScript off.
Do you end up with a plain text page when you do that? If so, that would seem like a reasonable alternative. Turning off javascript on a regular desktop or laptop computer makes a mess of Yuku, though. I don't think I'd want to emulate that.

No, the pages end up looking pretty much the same. The only major difference I can remember seeing with JavaScript turned off is that I see board extensions next to users' names. You have to understand that most JavaScript features do not work on cell phones anyway. Even with it turned on, you are not going to see things like scrolling marquees or other fancy stuff. JavaScript on cell phones is very limited -- at least it is on the Sidekick, which is what this person is using. I'll tell you what. I'll post some cell phone screenshots showing this board (and perhaps some other boards) with and without JavaScript enabled, so you can compare side-by-side. You'll see the pages look nearly identical -- but with JavaScript enabled, the page takes a longer time to load. Please give me a day or two. I'll be back.

Gray Eagle, you don't need your phone number to log into Yuku using the Sidekick, and Yuku does not have a mobile version. There were plans at one time to have a mobile version, so there are Help files and so forth about it, but it was not actually implemented. You need to just use the ordinary Web page layout. Many Yuku features will not work if you have JavaScript turned on (see below), but you should be able to login whether it is turned on or off. Even if you managed to log in and stay logged in, you would not be able to post here at Yuku with JavaScript turned on since it hides the "Compose Post" box, so you should have JavaScript turned off to post here at Yuku. Here is how the login screen looks from the Support board. It looks identical whether JavaScript is turned on or off. As you can see, there are boxes to login. The box on the left is for your User Name, and the box on the right is for your password. If you are not seeing this, or if you cannot stay logged in, then there is something wrong with your device.
Back to the conversation: I experimented viewing Yuku pages with the Sidekick (called the "Hiptop" outside of the U.S.), both with JavaScript turned on and with JavaScript turned off. Below are screenshots. JavaScript doesn't work on the device the way it does on a computer. It is limited in what features will work (for instance, scrolling marquees don't work). The only Yuku feature I found to actually work the way you would expect with JavaScript turned on is that it will hide the board extension on user names. In fact, I discovered that posting on Yuku is actually impossible with JavaScript turned on because the "Compose Post" box is hidden for some reason. I tried it out on three different boards, including here at the Support board, two of which I've shown below. For the most part, the Web pages look identical with JavaScript turned on and turned off, but for the times when they do not appear identical, it is almost always a disadvantage with JavaScript turned on. That might seem counter-intuitive since features on computers work better with JavaScript turned on, but on the Sidekick, it is the opposite. Besides not being able to post on Yuku with JavaScript turned on, the pages take much longer to load as well. Below are screenshots showing the differences. I didn't bother posting screenshots of the rest of the pages since they appeared identical, or nearly identical, with both JavaScript turned on and off. The text-size can be made larger or smaller on the device; I have it set to slightly larger than "medium".
Sidekick (Hiptop) Screenshots
JavaScript turned on: Board extension on User Name is hidden.
JavaScript turned off: Board extension on User Name can be seen.
JavaScript turned on: Navigation button appears, but you can't click it, and you can't see your old posts.
JavaScript turned off: Clicking on the Navigation button brings up a screen with links to your old posts.
JavaScript turned on: You can't click on "Interact" button or see the features associated with it.
JavaScript turned off: List of "Interact" features (links) appear below it which can be clicked.
JavaScript turned on: There is no "Compose Post" box!
JavaScript turned off: "Compose Post" box shows up. There is no "Formatting Toolbar," but text can be formatted using HTML.
JavaScript turned on: There is no "Compose Post" box! (Another example from another board.)
